Voices of Temple Stay participants

H.N.

Just recently, I had a conversation with a business associate I’ve been working with for over five years. For the first time, we talked about his hobbies—something beyond work.

I was deeply impressed by how attentively the monks observed even the smallest of my habits and gestures—things I had overlooked until now—and how they gently pointed them out at just the right moment, immediately after they occurred. These timely observations became powerful realizations for me.

It’s not often that we get the opportunity to observe our own actions objectively. Yet the way they offered guidance—always with the encouraging sentiment of “You could be even better this way; don’t let this potential go to waste”—uplifted my motivation rather than discouraging me. I was truly moved by their sincere approach.

Since returning to everyday life after the temple stay, I’ve already noticed meaningful changes. Just recently, I had a conversation with a business associate I’ve been working with for over five years. For the first time, we talked about his hobbies—something beyond work.

Up until now, our relationship had been strictly professional. But in that moment of casual, personal exchange, I sensed a new kind of presence within myself—something different from the “me” I had known.

That moment, in which I connected with someone not just as a professional, but as a fellow human being, stirred something warm in my heart.

Of course, it’s something so simple and obvious—but I now realize that we can truly deepen our sense of gratitude toward those around us by understanding who they are, why they’re there, and how they’re supporting us from different angles.

Even though it was just a one-week stay, I strongly feel that the teachings and experiences I received at Fukugonji Temple will continue to gradually seep into my daily life, revealing their impact over time.

Lastly, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the uchideshi (live-in trainees) who welcomed us so warmly and generously amidst their busy routines.

Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart.
